do you have to charter your own plane to get there? that could be cost prohibitive.

    Haha - no, there's a ferry boat.

Isn't that place haunted? I swear it is... and they have ghost tours 'n such. So yeah fun place but most visitors return to key west by night... I wonder why.

    That said I'd go.

Haven't heard it's haunted, no. But it does look like a good vacay, doesn't it??

"The Dry Tortugas are a range of barrier islands off the coast. They are uninhabited - except for the ghosts said to live in an old brick fort that was used as a prison."

We visited there a few months ago and camped a few nights--it is truly awesome. Two reasons not a lot of people go are that it is a several hour, very turbulent ferry ride (nearly everyone on board was sea sick). The ferry also costs around $180 per person, so not cheap. Also, there is no fresh water on the island. Nothing to drink, no showers, etc. It is truly primitive camping and you must take in all your food/drinking water. Truly a great camping experience though for those not faint of heart.

Thanks for the input, Jess! That's great stuff. I can't wait to get down there.
